Window Tint Hawaii FAQs

What are the window tint laws in Hawaii?

Hawaii law requires that the front-side windows allow more than 35% of light through (35% VLT or higher). The rear side windows and rear windshield have no VLT restriction, so you can go as dark as you’d like on those. The windshield may only have a non-reflective tint applied to the top 4 inches. At Auto Trim Hawaii, we’re familiar with all Hawaii window tint regulations and will always recommend a legal configuration for your vehicle and let you know your options for the back windows, where you have full flexibility.

What is the darkest legal tint in Hawaii?

The darkest legal tint for front side windows in Hawaii is 35% VLT, meaning the film must allow at least 35% of visible light through. There is no darkness limit on rear side windows or the rear windshield, so those can be tinted as dark as you’d like, including 20% or 5% (limo tint). The windshield may only have a non-reflective strip applied to the top 4 inches. We’ll always confirm a legal configuration before any installation.

Is 20% tint legal in Hawaii?

A 20% tint (which allows only 20% of visible light through) is not legal on the front side windows in Hawaii, but it is perfectly legal on rear side windows and the rear windshield. If you want a darker tint on the front, we can discuss the closest legal option (35% VLT) and what that would look like in person. Many customers are surprised by how much heat and UV protection a legal 35% front tint still provides, especially when paired with nano-ceramic film.

How much does car window tinting cost in Hawaii?

At Auto Trim Hawaii, car window tinting starts at $299 for dyed film (XPEL PRIME CS), $450 for single-layer nano-ceramic (XPEL PRIME XR Black), and $600 for multilayer nano-ceramic (XPEL PRIME XR Plus). Prices vary depending on your vehicle type and the number of windows being tinted. We offer free estimates, so reach out, and we’ll put together a personalized quote for your car.

How long does window tinting take, and how do I care for it afterward?

For most vehicles, the installation process takes approximately 2–3 hours. After installation, we recommend waiting at least 3–5 days before rolling your windows down to allow the film to fully cure. This is especially important in Hawaii’s humid climate, where curing can take slightly longer than in drier climates. You’ll also want to avoid cleaning the inside of the windows with ammonia-based products, as these can degrade the film over time. We’ll walk you through full aftercare instructions at the time of your appointment.

What's the difference between dyed and nano-ceramic window tint?

Dyed window tint is the most affordable option; it reduces glare and blocks UV rays. Nano-ceramic tint is a premium upgrade that uses advanced ceramic particles to reject significantly more heat and infrared radiation without making your windows darker. In Hawaii’s intense sun, many drivers find the heat rejection difference very noticeable, especially on a black vehicle parked outside. Our nano-ceramic options (XPEL PRIME XR Black and XR Plus) are also recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation for UV protection, making them a popular choice for families and outdoor enthusiasts here in Hawaii.
